Send to the Department of Sociology:

  • A brief statement telling us why you want to pursue your degree in Sociology at USF;
  • An example of your written work (such as a paper from an undergraduate course);
  • Three letters of reference. Please arrange to have them sent directly to the Graduate Director of the Sociology
    MA program.

Important Notes About Admissions:

  • The minumum requirements for admission (an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or GRE (verbal and quantitative) of at least 1,000) allow an application to proceed in the admission process. Yet because our admissions are competitive, these minimums do not guarantee admission.
  • The deadline for Fall admissions is March 1.
  • Students planning on pursuing a full-time course of study should start the program in a Fall semester. Given the pattern of course offerings, students admitted to full-time study beginning in a Spring semester should anticipate that the program will take five (rather than four) semesters to complete.
  • Graduate assistantship awards typically are allocated in March for the next academic year.
  • During the application process you should keep in contact with the Sociology Director of Graduate Studies: The Division of Graduate Studies is a bureaucracy, files sometimes are lost; the Sociology Graduate Director can advise you about what classes you should take; you can start to receive information from the Department that might be of interest to you.
  • You do not need to be formally admitted to enroll in graduate courses in Sociology. Courses can be taken as a non-degree seeking student. Upon approval, it is possible to transfer up to 12 hours of graduate credit taken as a non-degree seeking student. http://www.usf.edu/admin_nondegree.htm
