Graduate Program in Sociology
The graduate program is rigorous and engaging.
Welcome to the Master's Degree program at the University of South Florida. As you
will see, the program offers a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives
and substantive specialty areas. Theoretical perspectives range from classical social
theory to feminism, interactionism, social constructionism, critical race theory,
and postmodernism. Our faculty use diverse research methods including survey research,
secondary data analysis, archival research, interviews, participant observation,
and contextual analysis.
Recent graduate student projects have examined such topics as binge drinking on
college campuses, gay men's identity construction, body image ideals as reflected
in printed personal advertisements, the experiences of foster care mothers, teen
mothers, midwifery, and women in non-traditional careers. Others have focused on
Latina migrant farm workers, the history of ageism, assisted care living, how religiosity
of African Americans influences community participation, and how teenage girls understand
popularity. Some of our graduates have moved on to Ph.D. programs at Syracuse University,
University of Illinois, University of California at Irvine, University of Georgia,
University of Washington; others have professional employment as teachers, consultants,
and directors of social services.
