Program Requirements for MA
Graduate Students at Couch-Stone Symposium
The MA degree in Sociology requires 36 hours of coursework in the following categories:
Core Courses: 9 hours
- SYA 6126 Theory
(Sociological Theory)
- SYA 6305 Methods
(Sociological Methods)
- SYA 6405 Statistics
(Statistics)
or other advisor-approved graduate-level statistics course
Notes About Core Courses:
A final grade of B- or better is required in both SYA 6126 and SYA 6305 before defending
a thesis proposal or beginning an internship.
SYA 6126 (Theory) and SYA 6405 (Statistics) are typically offered in Fall semesters,
SYA 6305 is typically offered in Spring semesters
Elective Courses: 21 hours
At least 12 hours must be in graduate seminars in Sociology
- These can not include SYA 6933 (Teaching Sociology)
- These can not include 4000 level courses taken for 6000 level credit.
No more than 6 hours of credit transferred from another university
No more than 12 hours taken as a non-degree-seeking student
The following elective credit options requires advisor approval prior to registration:
- No more than 6 hours of 4000 level courses
- No more than 6 hurs of SYA 6909 (indipendent study) or SYA 6912 (directed research)br>
- No more than 9 hours of graduate-level credits from departments other than Sociology.
3. Capstone Experience: 6 hours
